Prologue

In ancient times the gods brought forth humans for their selfish needs.  War and chaos the order of things.  Out of this a dark force took hold of humanity.  Humans who possessed the dark power of the gods have been known by many names but vampire is one of the most common.  Since their creation there have been those who have tried to turn the dark tide back again and restore balance on Earth.  They have taken many forms.  The wolf being among them.

A wolf is running through the woods at night.  She is a lone wolf.  She is not the hunter tonight but the hunted.  She comes to a steep cliff.  Suddenly the wolf is no more and in her place stands a woman with a dark complexion.  In her one hand she is holding a sword and on her back are a quiver of arrows and bow.  This woman’s name is Rebecca.  Rebecca hears them approaching.  Even without her wolf senses she has been in too many battles to not pick up on every detail around her.  She hears their heavy breathing and smells their sweat in the air.  Their adrenaline racing.  She holds her sword against her feeling its smoothness as she controls her breath in anticipation for what is about to come.   Suddenly a dark figure comes out of the shadows and attacks her.  She cuts him down with one quick mighty blow of her sword.  She smells the blood.  At one time she found the odor repugnant but that was a long time ago now it has become familiar and oddly comforting.  Rebecca reflexively swings her sword 180 degrees to cut down another onrushing figure with the skill that clearly demonstrates prowess as a warrior.  But no sooner has she cut down this figure than five more appear.  She knows her attackers are what are commonly called vampires by humans.  She knows that werewolves and vampires kill each other on sight.  But what she doesn’t know is why they are so aggressively pursuing her.  The war between the wolf and the vampire has been going on for a very long time but never has she been ambushed like this before.  They have become almost rabid.  What is driving them to attack with such abandon and ferocity.  Theses vampires move quickly and with strength as vampires do but so does Rebecca and the vampires can’t land a blow.  Rebecca stabs a female vampire with her sword and pins her  to the ground with it.  As she does this she hears the click of a gun.  She doesn’t even think but just reacts.  She spins around to the other side of the woman she just stabbed.  As she spins she lets go of the sword and grabs her bow and arrow and in one fluid movement fires the arrow at the sound of the gun.  The arrow impales the head of the vampire before he can get off a clean shot.  Most vampires detest guns she thinks to herself, almost as much as werewolves, they both prefer to get their hands dirty.  If they brought guns they must desperately want her dead.  She quickly puts the bow back over her back.  She has carried it for so long it feels like a part of her body same as her sword, her wolf’s fang.  She picks up the sword pulling it out of the ground and twisting it so it pulls out the heart of the now dead vampire woman.  As she has taught others in her day you can never be to sure with them always better to hold their hearts in your hand.  Rebecca hears the rushing air and footsteps behind her.  “The fun never ends”, she says to herself as she jumps very high and over another male vampire attacking her with an ax.  They have to give up some time she thinks.  They are foolish to attack her like this.  The vampire that rushes her spins around and runs towards her again swinging his ax wildly.  She jumps high again and but this time she lunges at him easily avoiding the ax.  She gives one deft swipe of her sword as she passes him and lands behind him crouching on the ground.  She doesn’t even look behind her to see the vampire’s head fall off his shoulders.  She knows she landed the sword where she wanted to.  She stands ready to face her remaining attackers.  As she spins around a spike is plunged into her back out of nowhere and it goes through her body and out of her chest piercing her heart.

The pain doesn’t bother her.  She made peace with pain ages ago.  She does not fear death either for she knows that life is but a chapter in a never-ending story of the soul.  Instead what bothers her is that she has no idea where this spike came from.  How could they have possibly gotten the drop on her?  How did all her training, experience, and skills fail her?  As her body falls to the ground the last thought that races through her head is if they got her Matthew and Sarah are in grave danger and without them this world is lost.  A spike that looks to be made of bone or enamel, the mysterious weapon that ended the life of a great warrior, touches a wolf’s body lying on the ground to make sure the wolf is dead.  The wolf’s body is the same wolf that was running to the cliff and next to the wolf’s body lays the lifeless body of Rebecca.
